Most people never think about the switchboard until something goes wrong with it. What a switchboard upgrade involves

The work is more involved than swapping a panel. A proper upgrade brings the whole board up to current standards and leaves you with a record of what changed.

Assessment. An electrician tests the existing board, maps the circuits and checks the condition of the consumer mains feeding it.

Fixed quote. You get a set price for the work before anything is disconnected, including any wiring that needs replacing.

Installation. The old board comes out, the new enclosure goes in, and circuits are redistributed so no single one carries more than it should.

Ceramic fuses and older Sydney housing stock

Plenty of homes across Sydney still run on the board they were built with. If yours has round ceramic fuses that need a wire replaced when they blow, it predates safety switches entirely. This comes up more often than people expect, usually when the cable feeding the board turns out to be too small for the new one, or when a meter has to be moved to make room. Repairs, when a full upgrade is not the answer

The deciding factor is usually age and headroom. A board that is sound and has space to grow is worth repairing, and one that is full, unprotected and thirty years old generally is not.
