Electrician Katoomba
Switchboards, faults, lighting and heating, handled by licensed local electricians.
Local electricians for Katoomba homes, day or night
Katoomba’s older homes were never wired for electric heating, a modern kitchen and a houseful of devices. When the board trips every time the heater goes on, or the lights flicker through a foggy week, you need an electrician in Katoomba who has seen it before. Our licensed electricians are on call at any hour.
Every job is priced before work starts. Evening and weekend rates differ, so we give you the price for your visit before we start.
What electrical problems are common in Katoomba homes?
Many Katoomba cottages still run ceramic fuses, or a board with no safety switch on the lighting and power circuits. A safety switch is a device that cuts power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to earth, which can happen through a person. An upgrade puts safety switches on every circuit and leaves room for the loads a winter home needs. Our switchboard upgrade work is priced as a fixed job.
Katoomba spends long stretches in cloud and fog, and moisture finds its way into outdoor fittings, junction boxes and the backs of old power points. The result is a safety switch that trips at random. We use methodical fault tracing to find the circuit and the cause, rather than resetting and hoping.
Homes built before the 1960s may still carry rubber-insulated cable, which turns brittle with age. If we find it, we show you where it runs and quote to replace it room by room, starting with the circuits that carry the heaviest load.
Signs your board needs attention
- A safety switch that trips again after you reset it
- Lights that flicker or dim when a heater starts
- A switchboard that feels warm or smells of burning
- Ceramic fuses, or no safety switches at all
Heating, lighting and appliances for a Katoomba winter
At just over 1,000 metres above sea level, Katoomba is colder than Sydney, and frost on winter mornings is common.
Winter in Katoomba means short days and long evenings with the heating on. Swapping old halogen downlights for LED lighting upgrades cuts the running cost, and warm-toned fittings suit the older interiors that many homes here still have.
An induction cooktop or a new wall oven usually needs its own dedicated circuit, and in an older home the board may need work before it can take one. We handle cooktop and oven installation from the board to the benchtop, so the appliance supplier only has to drop it off. We confirm the cooktop rating before we quote, because induction models vary more than most people expect.
Run in reverse on a low setting, a ceiling fan pushes warm air down from a high ceiling, which suits the tall rooms in many Katoomba cottages.
Emergency electrician Katoomba: any hour, day or night
No power, a burning smell or a board that will not reset is worth a call straight away on 1300 164 206. We answer 24 hours a day, nights and weekends included, and agree the price with you before any work starts. Here is how our urgent electrical callouts work.
If the power goes out:
- Check whether your neighbours have power.

- Treat any fallen line as live.
- If the board will not reset, call us at any hour.
If a line is down in the street or a pole is damaged, stay at least 8 metres away and call Endeavour Energy on 131 003. The street network is theirs to make safe. Once supply is back, we can check everything on your side of the meter.
Endeavour Energy’s September 2026 storm update says gale force winds cut power to 62,256 customers at the peak. It lists the Lower Mountains among the worst hit areas.
Storms like that bring trees down on lines, and surges can follow when power returns. A surge protection device is a unit at the switchboard that limits the spike reaching your fridge and other appliances. Our guide explains what causes power surges.
Part of the connection to your home is yours. Endeavour Energy says the owner looks after point of supply hardware, such as insulators and brackets. The owner also keeps trees clear of powerlines on the property.
Endeavour can issue a Customer Defect report for unsafe private assets. A Level 2 accredited service provider is an electrician approved to work on the network side of the supply, such as service lines and points of attachment. We hold that accreditation (number 5559), so we can inspect your side of the connection and tell you what needs fixing.

Do I get a compliance certificate for electrical work in Katoomba?
Yes, for any work that needs one. In New South Wales the electrician who tests the work must lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work within seven days. Since July 2026 these go through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal, which sends a copy to you. Keep it with your house records, because buyers and insurers may ask for it.
If your home is heritage listed or sits in one of Katoomba’s conservation areas, external work such as moving a meter box can involve Blue Mountains City Council. We raise that before we quote.
Electrical work in Katoomba cottages, guesthouses and holiday lets
Katoomba grew as a resort town, and its streets still carry the timber cottages, brick guesthouses and converted holiday homes of that era. Many have been renovated in stages, so it is common to open a ceiling and find three generations of wiring side by side.
Katoomba homes in the 2021 Census

Most Katoomba homes are separate houses, so the board and the meter box belong to one owner. A third are rented, and landlords must keep smoke alarms working. About one dwelling in six was empty on Census night. That fits the holiday lets and second homes near the old guesthouse streets.
A reverse cycle system or a bank of panel heaters can double the load an old board was built for, and cold snaps are when overloaded circuits fail. We size new circuits for a Katoomba winter, not a Sydney one.
A switchboard is the panel that splits the incoming power into circuits and holds the circuit breakers and safety switches.
Electrician Katoomba: which switchboard does a home have?
| Switchboard | What it protects against | Where you will find it |
|---|---|---|
| Original ceramic fuses | Overload, when a fuse blows. No protection against electric shock. | Older cottages that have not been rewired. We check the wiring behind the board before anything is added. |
| Circuit breakers, no safety switches | Overload and short circuits. | Homes updated in stages. The missing piece is a safety switch on lighting and power. |
| Circuit breakers with safety switches | Overload, short circuits and electric shock. | The board to aim for before a heat pump, induction cooktop or EV charger goes in. |
Plenty of homes also have a detached studio or a garage turned into a spare room, often fed by a single run from the house. We check those runs for capacity and safety switch protection, because they are a common source of overloads once a heater goes in.
Guests in a holiday rental do not know where the switchboard is, so interconnected smoke alarms on every level and clearly labelled safety switches are worth checking between bookings.
We cover Katoomba, Leura and Medlow Bath, and our Blue Mountains electricians reach the rest of the ridge. In the mid mountains, our electricians in Springwood look after the lower towns.

Electrician Katoomba FAQs
Moisture has usually reached an outdoor fitting, a garden light or an old power point on an external wall. Switch off the circuit that tripped and call us. Do not keep resetting it, because the fault can get worse.
It depends on the wiring behind it, but a board with ceramic fuses and no safety switches gives far less protection than a modern one. We can inspect it and give you a fixed price for an upgrade.
Endeavour Energy fixes damage on the street network and the service line to your point of supply. Call them on 131 003 and keep 8 metres clear of any fallen line. Past that point the repair is the owner’s job, and we can do it once the supply is safe.
Yes, we add dedicated circuits for reverse cycle air conditioning, panel heaters and heat pump hot water. First we check that the board can carry the extra load through a Katoomba winter.
Yes, every electrician on our team is licensed and carries full insurance. Our contractor licence covers electrical, plumbing, gasfitting and draining work.
It depends on the job and the age of the wiring, so we quote after we see the work. Quotes are free, and once you approve the figure it does not change.
