Plumber Katoomba
Frozen pipes, blocked drains, hot water and gas, fixed by licensed local plumbers.
Local plumbers for Katoomba homes, day or night
When the pipes freeze overnight or the hot water gives out on a July morning, you need a plumber in Katoomba who understands what the cold does to a mountain home. Our licensed plumbers cover Katoomba around the clock, from the cottages near Katoomba Street to the guesthouses out toward Echo Point.
Katoomba sits just over 1,000 metres above sea level. That height changes the plumbing: water comes in colder, pipes on the outside of a building freeze, and drains are often cut through sandstone. We price each job before we start, and the price holds.
A backflow prevention device is a valve that stops water flowing backwards into the mains supply. We also look after these devices and water meter connections for homes and businesses in Katoomba.
What plumbing jobs come up most in Katoomba?
The jobs we see most in Katoomba trace back to the altitude, the age of the housing or the rock underneath.
Frost-split and burst pipes
A hard frost splits exposed copper on the shaded side of a house, along with garden taps and pipes under raised floors, and the leak often shows only once the ice thaws. Our emergency plumbing team isolates the supply and repairs the damaged section.
Blocked sewer lines
Older clay sewer pipes and the roots of established pines and eucalypts cause recurring drain blockages. A camera inspection tells us whether a clean will hold or the pipe needs repair.
Hot water that runs out early
Storage hot water units work harder at altitude because the incoming water is colder, so they run out sooner and wear out earlier. We handle hot water system repairs on gas and electric units and tell you when replacement makes more sense.
Hidden leaks under the house
A damp subfloor and a rising water bill usually point to a hidden leak under the house. We use non-invasive leak tracing before anything is opened up.
Signs of a hidden leak
- A water bill that climbs when your use has not changed
- A water meter that keeps moving with every tap off
- A damp, musty smell or soft flooring near a wall or bathroom
- Patches of soft or unusually green ground over a pipe run
Which pipes are yours in Katoomba?
The main under the street and the meter at your property are Sydney Water’s. Everything private is the owner’s job: the water pipes, the wastewater pipes and the fixtures. Sydney Water explains who owns what.
If the blockage is on your side, you need a licensed plumber. Sydney Water’s wastewater blockages guide lists the signs. Your neighbours have no blockage, your drain is not shared, and the overflow only happens when you use water at your property. The owner also clears tree roots that enter the junction at the point of connection, as the repairs guide sets out.
Sydney Water asks owners to avoid planting trees within 6 metres of wastewater pipes.
Katoomba’s Catalina water zone is part of the Cascade system. Sydney Water’s June 2024 environmental review for the Catalina Reservoir says the zone supplies drinking water to over 6,000 properties and about 9,500 people. It proposes a new 5.8 megalitre reservoir off Valley Road. That is the network side. From the meter in, the private pipes and fixtures are the owner’s.
Emergency plumber Katoomba: any hour, day or night
A burst pipe does not wait for business hours, and neither do we. Call 1300 164 206 at any hour and a licensed plumber answers. Rates change in the evenings and on weekends, and you get the price before we start.
While you wait, turn the water off at the meter. In most Katoomba homes it sits near the front boundary. In frosty weather the valve can stiffen, so a firm, steady turn works better than force.
If a pipe bursts:
- Turn the water off at the meter.
- Switch off the power at the switchboard if water is near power points or lights.
- Open the taps to drain the pipes and ease the pressure.
- Call us at any hour, and keep the area clear until we arrive.
Gas plumbing for Katoomba heaters and cooktops
Gas does a lot of work in a Katoomba winter. Space heaters, instantaneous hot water and cooktops all run on it, whether the house is on mains gas or LPG bottles. When a heater is moved, a cooktop replaced or a new bayonet added in the living room, the connection has to be done by a licensed gasfitter and tested before it is used.
Our licensed gas fitting covers new connections, appliance swaps and pressure testing on older lines. Many Katoomba homes have gas pipe that has been extended several times over the decades, and a pressure test is the quickest way to know it is sound.
If you ever smell gas, leave the house, do not touch light switches or appliances, and call us from outside. Treat it as an emergency, whatever the hour.

Do I need council approval for plumbing work in Katoomba?
Usually not. Plumbing in the Blue Mountains is regulated by Building Commission NSW rather than Blue Mountains City Council. For work that needs it, we lodge a Notice of Work, which is the notice a plumber gives before regulated plumbing work starts. When we finish, we give you a Certificate of Compliance, which confirms the work was done to the required standard. That paperwork is our job, not yours.
Council can come into it when a job alters the outside of a heritage-listed home or one in a conservation area. Plenty of Katoomba properties fall into that group, so we check before we quote.
Plumbing in Katoomba’s older homes
Much of Katoomba was built between the 1880s and the 1930s, when the town grew as a holiday destination for Sydney. Weatherboard cottages, brick guesthouses and converted holiday homes still make up a large share of the streets around the town centre.
Katoomba homes in the 2021 Census

Most Katoomba homes are separate houses, so the pipes from the street connection to the taps belong to one owner. About one dwelling in six was empty on Census night. A holiday house left empty through a cold snap can split a pipe and leak unseen.
Those homes bring their own plumbing. Original galvanised or early copper pipe, cast iron waste lines and clay sewers laid in short sections are all common. On the steep streets that fall toward the Jamison Valley, stormwater has to be carried off quickly, and a blocked downpipe or silted pit shows up as water under the house after heavy rain.
Plumber Katoomba: blocked sewer line, clean, reline or dig?
| Option | What it involves | When it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Clean the line | Clears roots and build-up from the pipe, then a camera checks it. | A first blockage where the pipe itself is sound. |
| Reline the pipe | Lines the old pipe from the inside, with little digging. | Cracked or root-damaged clay that still holds its shape. |
| Dig and replace | Removes the broken length and lays new pipe. | A collapsed or badly shifted pipe that a liner cannot follow. |
Guesthouses and holiday rentals add another layer. A home that sleeps ten through a winter weekend asks far more of its hot water than the family it was built for. When a unit is near the end of its life, we size the replacement for the busiest weekend, not a quiet Tuesday.
We also cover Leura and Medlow Bath. Further up the ridge, the Blackheath plumbers deal with even harder winters, and in the mid mountains we look after homes around Springwood and the towns below.

Plumber Katoomba FAQs
Lag any exposed pipe on the outside of the house, especially on the shaded south side, and fit covers to garden taps. On the coldest nights, a slow drip from an indoor tap keeps water moving. If a pipe does freeze, never use a naked flame on it. Call us and we will thaw and check it safely.
Yes, evening and weekend rates differ from weekday rates. You get the price for the job before we start, whenever you call.
Yes. Older homes are a large part of Katoomba, and we match repairs to the original materials where it matters. If a job changes the outside of a listed property, we raise any council question before booking.
Only some jobs need one. New drainage or a new fixture does, while replacing a tap or a like-for-like hot water unit usually does not. Where one is required, we complete it and give you a copy.
Yes, every plumber on our team is licensed and carries full insurance. The contractor licence, 273594C, covers plumbing, gasfitting, draining and electrical work.
It depends on the job and what we find, so we quote after we see the work. Quotes are free, and once you approve the figure it does not change.
