If your home is on Central Coast Council’s water and sewer, Council looks after its pipes up to your point of connection. We work on the private side: the pipes, fixtures and drains on your property.
What plumbing problems do Terrigal homes run into?
These are the jobs we’re called to most around Terrigal, from kitchen taps to the drain at the back of the block.
Blocked sewer lines
Central Coast Council names tree roots and flushed wipes as common causes of sewer blockages. We clear blocked drains and use a camera to see if a clean will hold.
Hidden leaks
A water meter that keeps moving with every tap off points to a leak somewhere on the property. We trace it with leak detection work before anything is opened up.
Hot water that fails
A unit that runs cold early, leaks at the base or makes noise needs a look. We handle hot water unit repairs and tell you when replacing makes more sense.
Stormwater trouble
Council says owners must keep roof drainage, gutters, downpipes and pits on their property in good condition. We do stormwater drainage work where a run has failed.
Who owns which pipes in Terrigal?
If your home is on Council’s water supply, Council’s 2019 guide says Council is responsible for the water meter and meter tap. It also covers the pipes and inspection points leading to your point of connection. You look after all pipes and fittings on your property from that point, including garden taps, the hot water service and water tanks.
If your home is on Council’s sewer, the same guide says Council maintains its sewer pipes up to the point of connection. Owners maintain the sewer pipes and fittings inside the property up to and including that point. That takes in the boundary shaft, the overflow gully and the inspection opening.
For a blockage or overflow in your property’s pipework, Council’s sewer blockage fact sheet says to contact Council in the first instance. Council will advise if a plumber is required. Council’s 2019 sewer guide says the problem may be Council’s responsibility if any of these apply, and asks you to contact Council immediately:
- The problem is visible outside your property boundary
- Your neighbours have the same problem
- Your boundary shaft is flooded
- There is widespread flooding in your local area
Emergency plumber Terrigal: any hour, day or night
A burst pipe or an overflowing toilet won’t wait for morning. Call 1300 164 206 at any hour and a licensed plumber answers. Evening and weekend rates differ, and you get the price before we start. Here’s how our emergency plumbing callouts work.
If you’re on Council’s water and sewer, Council asks you to call 02 4306 7900 for urgent issues such as major leaks or sewer spills. Its 2019 water guide says a leaking water meter or meter tap may be Council’s responsibility.
While you wait:
- Turn the water off at the main tap. If you’re on Council’s water, it asks owners to keep a clear area of at least 50 centimetres around each side of the water meter, so it’s easy to reach.
- Switch off the power at the switchboard if water is near power points or lights.
- Stop using the toilet and shower if sewage is backing up.
- Call us at any hour, and keep people clear of the wet area.
Plumber Terrigal: gas fitting and hot water
A new cooktop, a heater that moves or a gas hot water unit all need a licensed gasfitter. Our contractor licence covers gasfitting, and our gas plumbing work covers new connections, appliance swaps and pressure testing.
If you smell gas, get everyone outside and call from there. Don’t switch lights or appliances on or off. Our gas leak detection can find where it’s escaping.
If your home is on Council’s water supply, Council’s 2019 guide puts the hot water service on the owner’s side of the connection point. A failed unit is then the owner’s repair or replacement. We’ll look at the system and quote before any work begins.

Do I need approval for plumbing work in Terrigal?
Yes, for on-site plumbing work. Central Coast Council’s plumbing page says on-site plumbing works in the Central Coast region require an inspection by Council. At least two days before a plumber starts work, the plumber must give Council a notice of work.
NSW lists emergency work and minor works, such as replacing tap ware and existing hot water systems, as cases where a Notice of Work doesn’t need to be supplied.
A Certificate of Compliance confirms the work complies with the plumbing regulations and the Plumbing Code of Australia. Council’s page says the plumber must submit it within two days of completing the work, and a copy must go to Council and the owner.

In a strata scheme, NSW says the owners corporation must repair and maintain common property, and owners repair anything in their own property. In most cases that includes plumbing in internal walls and fixtures such as baths, toilets, sinks and showers. Tenants should ask their landlord.

It depends where the blockage sits. If your home is on Council’s sewer, Council clears blockages in its own infrastructure. The owner looks after pipes on the property up to and including the point of connection. Council’s fact sheet says to contact Council first, and it will advise if a plumber is needed.
It covers our labour if our workmanship causes a failure and the work is defective. Parts aren’t covered.
Yes, for any plumbing or drainage work. NSW requires the plumber to complete a Certificate of Compliance and give a copy to the person who arranged the work. On the Central Coast, Council’s plumbing page also says a copy goes to Council and the owner.
Switch off the power at the switchboard if water is near power points or lights. Turn the water off at the main tap, then call us at any hour. If you’re on Council’s water and the meter or meter tap itself is leaking, Council’s guide says it may be Council’s responsibility.
