Licensed electricians for Kensington homes, day or night
A switchboard that trips when the oven and heater run together needs a licensed electrician in Kensington. Our electrician Kensington team takes calls at any hour.
We price every job before work starts, and the figure is fixed once you approve it. Evening and weekend rates differ, so we quote your visit first.
What electrical faults turn up in Kensington flats and houses?
The 2021 Census counted 3,110 flats or apartments and 915 separate houses among Kensington’s 4,354 occupied homes. Every one of them has a switchboard.
A switchboard is the panel that splits incoming power into circuits. It holds the breakers and, on a newer board, the safety switches. A safety switch is a device that cuts power in a split second when current leaks to earth. When one keeps tripping, tracing the fault finds the circuit behind it instead of just resetting it.
Some boards still carry ceramic fuses, and some lack a safety switch on the power circuits. Either needs a closer look before a new circuit goes on. A switchboard upgrade is quoted as a fixed job.
Signs the board needs a look
- A safety switch that cuts out again soon after you reset it
- Downlights that dim when the oven or a heater switches on
- A switchboard cover that feels warm, or a burnt smell near it
- Old ceramic fuses where breakers should be
Lighting, appliances and strata approval in Kensington
In a strata scheme, some electrical jobs need approval first. NSW lists installing or replacing wiring, cabling, power or access points as minor renovations. A reverse cycle air conditioner is on the list too. Ask the owners corporation, strata committee or strata managing agent for permission, and check your by-laws before you book.
Lighting follows its own split. In most cases NSW puts lights that hang into your home with the owner. Lights recessed into the ceiling go to the owners corporation. Our LED lighting upgrades cover the fittings that are yours.
A new induction cooktop or wall oven needs a circuit that can carry it. We handle oven and cooktop fitting from the board to the appliance, and we confirm the rating before we quote. A new ceiling fan needs a secure fixing and a circuit that can run it.

Ausgrid says a Level 2 accredited service provider can install, repair or maintain service lines. These are the overhead or underground lines between a customer installation and its network. We hold Level 2 accreditation (number 5559).

Do I get a certificate after electrical work in Kensington?
Yes. NSW says electricians must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work whenever they do electrical work. The person who tests the work submits it within seven days of the test. From 1 July 2026, that goes through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal.
The portal emails a copy to the customer when the electrician adds the customer’s email address. See NSW’s page on electrical compliance requirements.
Electrician Kensington: rentals, flats and empty homes
Kensington sits in Randwick City Council’s area, according to the council’s city plan. That plan also names Kingsford, Randwick, Coogee and Maroubra among its suburbs.

More than half of Kensington’s occupied homes are rented. NSW says a landlord must make sure smoke alarms, including heat alarms, work. A landlord must also use a licensed electrician for a hard-wired alarm. Strata schemes carry some exceptions, listed in NSW’s smoke alarm rules for rentals.
Electrician Kensington: smoke alarms in a rented home
| Situation | What NSW says | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| An alarm stops working | Tenants must tell the landlord or agent, even for a flat battery | The landlord must repair or replace it within two business days. |
| A hard-wired alarm needs work | The landlord must use a licensed electrician to repair or replace it | A tenant can arrange it if the landlord hasn’t within two business days. |
| An alarm is old | The landlord must replace it within 10 years of manufacture | Sooner, if the manufacturer specifies. |
The Census counted 931 unoccupied private dwellings. Separately, NSW says a qualified electrician must inspect an installation that has been off for six months or more. That inspection comes before the power is remotely switched back on.
