Electrician Surry Hills
Fault finding, switchboard upgrades, lighting and appliance circuits, done by licensed local electricians who answer day or night.
Licensed electricians for Surry Hills terraces and flats, day or night
A sparking power point, a safety switch that keeps dropping or a board that won’t reset needs a licensed electrician in Surry Hills. Our electrician Surry Hills team takes calls at any hour.
We price each job before work starts, and the price is fixed once you approve it. Evening and weekend rates differ from daytime rates, so we give you the figure for your visit first.
What electrical faults come up in Surry Hills homes?
A switchboard is the panel that splits incoming power into circuits. It holds the breakers and, in a newer board, the safety switches. A safety switch is a device that cuts power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to earth.
A breaker that trips again soon after a reset points to a fault on that circuit or in something plugged into it. Fault tracing for trips finds the circuit, so you aren’t left resetting and hoping.
Ceramic fuses need a closer look before anything new goes on. So does a board with no safety switch on the power and lighting circuits. A board upgrade is quoted as a fixed job.
Signs the board needs a look
- A breaker or safety switch that trips again within minutes
- Lights that dim when the oven or an air conditioner starts
- A panel that feels warm, crackles or smells burnt
- Ceramic fuses where breakers should be
Appliances, air conditioning and smoke alarms in a Surry Hills flat
A new induction cooktop or wall oven needs its own circuit, and an older board has to take the load. We run oven and cooktop installation from the board to the appliance.
In a strata home, NSW lists installing or replacing wiring, cabling, power or access points as minor renovations. A reverse cycle air conditioner is on the same list. Minor renovations need approval. You ask the owners corporation, strata committee or strata managing agent for permission. NSW says more than 50% of the votes cast at the meeting must be in favour. Cosmetic work doesn’t need approval.
Smoke alarm installation is another job we do for Surry Hills homes.
Emergency electrician Surry Hills: any hour, day or night
No power, sparks or a burning smell are worth a call to 1300 164 206. We answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and agree the price before work starts.
- Ask a neighbour, or check the hallway lights, to see whether the whole building is dark.
- If only your flat is dark, look for a tripped safety switch or the main switch.
- Unplug the appliance that was running.
- Treat any fallen wire as live and stay clear.
If Ausgrid supplies your home, its page says to report electrical faults and emergencies on 13 13 88 (24 hours). For electric shock, injury or any life-threatening situation, it says to call triple zero (000) immediately.
Ausgrid says to stay at least 8 metres, or 2 car lengths, away from fallen wires or powerlines. It adds that fallen trees and vegetation around damaged network equipment can hide electrical hazards.
Ausgrid also says a Level 2 Authorised and Accredited Service Provider (ASP/2) can install, repair or maintain service lines. These are the overhead or underground lines between a customer installation and its network. We hold Level 2 accreditation, number 5559.

Do I get a compliance certificate for electrical work in Surry Hills?
Yes, for electrical work. NSW says the person who tests the work submits a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. It’s due no later than seven days after the test. Since 1 July 2026 it has to go through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal. Handwritten and PDF forms are no longer accepted.
When the electrician adds your email address to the certificate, the portal sends you a copy. Keep it with the papers for the home.
Electrician Surry Hills: rentals, strata and the Ausgrid network

In 2021, 5,088 homes were rented. NSW says any electrical fault in a rental is an urgent repair. It adds that testing the safety switch is the only way to confirm it works at the start of a tenancy. Tenants need to tell the landlord or agent right away.
NSW also says landlords must make sure smoke alarms are working and can’t pass that job to tenants in the tenancy agreement. Landlords must install or replace removable batteries every year.
Ausgrid says its network delivers electricity to Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley. If Ausgrid supplies your home, it says all work from the first point of connection on the property is the customer’s installation. Keeping it safe is the customer’s job. A tenant who gets a defect notice should pass it to the landlord quickly.
Electrician Surry Hills: whose fault is it?
| What you see | Who looks after it | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Only your flat has lost power | Us | Check the board for a tripped safety switch or main switch. |
| A fallen wire or damaged pole outside | Ausgrid, if it supplies your home | Stay 8 metres away and call 13 13 88. |
| A fault in a rented home | The landlord | Tenants tell the landlord or agent straight away. |
| A light in the common corridor has failed | In most cases, the owners corporation | Tell your strata manager or committee. |
