What electrical faults come up in Palm Beach homes?
The 2021 Census recorded 368 homes owned outright in Palm Beach. Here are the faults worth knowing about.
A switchboard is the panel that splits incoming power into separate circuits. A safety switch is a device that cuts power when current leaks to earth. If one trips again after a reset, electrical fault tracing comes before another reset.
If Ausgrid supplies your home, it says all work from the first point of connection on the property is the customer’s electrical installation. The customer is responsible for keeping it safe and properly maintained. Our switchboard upgrade work is priced as a fixed job.
Warning signs at the board
- A safety switch that won’t stay on after a reset
- A buzzing or crackling sound near the panel
- Lights that flicker when a large appliance starts
- A power point that’s warm or discoloured
Lighting, fans and smoke alarms for Palm Beach homes
A ceiling fan needs a firm fixing and a circuit that can carry it. We handle ceiling fan fitting. Replacing old halogen downlights with LED lighting upgrades lowers the load on the circuit.
An induction cooktop, a wall oven or a reverse cycle air conditioner needs its own circuit in most homes. If the board is full, it needs work first. See our appliance circuit installation page.
Fire and Rescue NSW says to test your smoke alarm batteries every month. Press and hold the test button for at least five seconds until you hear the beeps. It says to vacuum dust off every six months. It also says to replace alarms every 10 years with 10-year lithium powered ones. See our smoke alarm installation page.
Emergency electrician Palm Beach: any hour, day or night
If a socket sparks, the board smells of burning or the power won’t come back after a reset, ring 1300 164 206 straight away. Our emergency electrician callouts run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You hear the price before work starts.
If Ausgrid supplies your home, it says the problem might be inside the house when you have power in some rooms. The same goes if your neighbours have power and you don’t. Ausgrid texts the primary account holder, the person named on the bill, when it knows of an outage.
While you wait:
- Look outside. Are the streetlights out, and do your neighbours have power?
- Switch off and unplug TVs, computers and other sensitive equipment to protect them from surges, as Ausgrid advises.
- Leave one light switched on so you know the moment power returns.
- Stay at least 8 metres from fallen powerlines or trees lying across them.
If Ausgrid supplies your home, it asks you to report faults and emergencies on 13 13 88 (24 hours). In a life-threatening situation, call 000 first.
Using a generator? Ausgrid says never to connect it to the house switchboard or wiring. Your equipment could be damaged when supply is restored. Only run it outdoors, in a well-ventilated area away from open windows.

Is a certificate issued after electrical work in Palm Beach?
Yes. For electrical wiring work, NSW says the person who carries out the electrical test must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. That has to happen as soon as practical, and no later than seven days after the test.
From 1 July 2026 it goes through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal. Paper and PDF forms are no longer accepted. The customer is emailed a copy when their email address is added.
Electrician Palm Beach: owners, tenants and the network
Palm Beach is on the NSW Electoral Commission’s list of localities that the Northern Beaches council area includes partially or wholly. Ausgrid’s network spans Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley. Its postcode checker shows which distribution network a postcode is in. If Ausgrid supplies your home, it maintains and repairs the network in the street.
Ausgrid says owners maintain all private poles and powerlines from the first point of connection to the switchboard. Owners also keep safe clearances between those wires and vegetation. Trimming near powerlines is highly dangerous, so Ausgrid says accredited workers must do it.
Ausgrid says an Authorised and Accredited Service Provider Level 2 can install, repair or maintain the service lines between a customer installation and its network. Our Level 2 electrician accreditation number is 5559.
Palm Beach homes in the 2021 Census
Source: ABS Census QuickStats. The ABS makes small random changes to figures for privacy.
In 2021, 368 homes were owned outright and 110 were rented. NSW lists a dangerous electrical fault as an urgent repair in a rental. Smoke alarms count as urgent too, though different rules cover their repair. The tenant must tell the landlord or agent straight away.
Electrician Palm Beach: who handles the fault?
| What you see | Who handles it | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| A pole or wire in the street is damaged | Ausgrid, on 13 13 88 | Keep at least 8 metres away and call if Ausgrid supplies your home. |
| A private pole or its wires need repair | The property owner | Ausgrid says owners maintain these beyond its connection point. |
