Electrician Hornsby
Switchboards, faults, lighting and appliances for Hornsby flats and houses, handled by licensed local electricians who quote the price first.
Licensed electricians for Hornsby units, townhouses and houses
Half the lights gone, a warm power point or a safety switch that won’t reset needs a licensed electrician in Hornsby. Our electrician Hornsby team takes calls at any hour.
We agree the price with you first, and it’s fixed once you approve it. Evening and weekend rates differ, so we quote your visit first.
Which wiring and switchboard faults show up in Hornsby homes?
The 2021 Census counted 5,120 flats or apartments and 3,056 separate houses in Hornsby. That’s out of 8,664 occupied homes. Each one has a switchboard, the panel that splits the power into circuits.
A safety switch is a device that cuts the power fast when current leaks to earth. Some boards still have ceramic fuses, and others have no safety switch on the power and lighting circuits.
A switchboard upgrade adds that protection. We price it as a fixed job.
A safety switch that keeps tripping points to a fault in a circuit or an appliance. We use tracing for the faulty circuit to find the cause. We don’t just reset it.
Signs your board needs attention
- A safety switch that trips again after a reset.
- Lights that dim when the oven starts.
- A power point or panel that feels warm.
- A burnt smell near the board.
- Ceramic fuses where breakers should be.
Electrician Hornsby: cooling, lighting and new appliances
A new oven or cooktop starts at the switchboard. Is there a free circuit, and a safety switch to guard it? Our appliance installation work includes the circuit behind the appliance.
Swapping halogen downlights for LED lighting upgrades cuts the running cost. A ceiling fan needs a fixing that takes its weight. Outdoor lights and power points need weatherproof fittings.
Working smoke alarms matter in every home. We supply smoke alarm installation for homes in Hornsby.
Emergency electrician Hornsby: any hour, day or night
No power, sparks or a board that won’t reset deserves a call on 1300 164 206. We answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and agree the price with you before work starts. Evening and weekend rates differ. Read about our emergency electrician callouts.
- Look outside. If the neighbours’ lights are off too, the fault may be in the street.
- If only your home is dark, check the board for a tripped safety switch.
- Unplug the appliance that was running.
- Keep well back from any wire that is down, and treat it as live.
If Ausgrid supplies your home, report faults and emergencies to it on 13 13 88 (24hrs). Its emergency page lists fallen or arcing powerlines, leaning poles, exposed underground cables and damaged kiosks or pillars.
Stay at least 8 metres, or 2 car lengths, from fallen wires. In a life-threatening situation, call triple zero 000.
Ausgrid also counts a shock or tingle as an electrical emergency. It says not to touch or rescue a person until the power has been cut off and the situation is safe.
Ausgrid says a Level 2 accredited service provider can install, repair or maintain the service lines between a customer installation and its network. We hold that accreditation, number 5559. See our Level 2 electrician work page. Ausgrid adds that all work inside the property needs a licensed electrical contractor.

What certificate comes with electrical work in Hornsby?
Work that needs one comes with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. The person who tests the work submits it, no later than seven days after the test. From 1 July 2026, it must go through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal. Paper and PDF forms are no longer accepted.
You’re emailed a copy when your email address is added to the certificate. NSW also says an installation that has been de-energised for six months or more needs a safety inspection by a qualified electrician before it’s re-energised. The customer gives a copy of that inspection certificate to their electricity retailer.

Hornsby homes in the 2021 Census

In 2021, 3,727 Hornsby homes were rented. NSW says the landlord must keep rental smoke alarms working, and the lease can’t pass that duty to the tenant. A landlord must use a licensed electrician to repair or replace a hard-wired alarm, with some exceptions in strata schemes.
With so many flats, EV charging is a local question. The NSW Government says owners must contact the owners corporation for approval to connect any EV charging equipment. Tenants must seek the landlord’s approval. Our EV charger installation covers the electrical work once that’s settled.
Electrician Hornsby: who approves an EV charger in a strata building?
| Your situation | Who approves it | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| You own a flat | The owners corporation | Contact the strata committee secretary, the strata manager or the building manager. |
| You rent a flat | Your landlord, who acts with the owners corporation | Ask your agent to pass the request on. |
| The building is already EV-ready | The owners corporation’s process | Follow the process the strata committee gives you. |
About 3,056 Hornsby homes are separate houses. If a tree on your own property is impacting the service wire to your home, Ausgrid says you’re responsible for clearing that growth up to your property boundary. It adds that tree trimming near its powerlines must be done by accredited workers.
The NSW Electoral Commission’s list for Hornsby Shire Council names Waitara, Thornleigh, Westleigh and Mount Colah. We also cover Waitara with our Waitara electricians, and Thornleigh with our Thornleigh electrical service.
