Electrician Killara
Switchboards, fault finding, smoke alarms and lighting circuits for Killara houses and units, done by licensed local electricians.
A licensed electrician for Killara houses and units
A smoke alarm that chirps at 2am or a breaker that trips with the kettle on is a job for an electrician in Killara. Our electrician Killara team takes calls at any hour, for houses and apartments.
Every job is priced before work starts, and the price holds once you approve it. Evening and weekend rates differ from daytime rates, so we quote your visit first.
Why does the power keep tripping in my Killara home?
The 2021 Census counted 2,020 separate houses among Killara’s 3,695 occupied homes. Each one has its own switchboard, the panel that splits incoming power into circuits.
A safety switch is a device that cuts power in a split second when current leaks to earth. When one keeps tripping, a faulty appliance or circuit is the likely cause. Tracing the fault finds the circuit instead of just resetting it.
Some boards still have ceramic fuses. Others have no safety switch on the power and lighting circuits. Either one needs a closer look before a new circuit goes on. A switchboard replacement is quoted as a fixed job.
Signs your board needs a look
- A breaker or safety switch that trips again within minutes
- Lights that dim when the oven or heater starts
- A warm panel, a crackle or a burnt smell at the board
- Ceramic fuses where breakers should be
Lighting, fans and cooking circuits for Killara homes
An induction cooktop or a new wall oven runs on a circuit of its own. In an older board, that circuit may need extra work first. We handle oven and cooktop fitting from the board to the appliance.
Swapping old halogen downlights for LED lighting upgrades cuts the load on the circuit. A new ceiling fan needs a secure fixing and a circuit that can run it.
Interconnected smoke alarms are linked so that when one sounds, they all do.

- Check if the neighbours have power.
- Look at your board for a tripped safety switch.
- Unplug the heater or appliance that was running.
- Treat any fallen wire as live, and keep well back.
If Ausgrid supplies your home, its page on fallen powerlines says to stay at least 8 metres, or 2 car lengths, away from fallen wires. Report faults and emergencies to Ausgrid on 13 13 88, which it lists as 24 hours. For a life-threatening situation or electric shock, call Triple Zero (000).
Not sure who supplies your street? Ausgrid has a postcode checker that names the distributor.

Will I get a compliance certificate for electrical work in Killara?
Yes, NSW requires one. NSW says the person who carries out the electrical test must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. That has to happen no later than seven days after the test.
From 1 July 2026 these certificates go through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal. When the customer’s email address is added, the system sends them a copy. Keep it with your house papers.

Killara has 939 rented homes and 1,575 flats. In a rented home, the landlord must make sure smoke alarms work, says NSW. A hard-wired alarm needs a licensed electrician to repair or replace it. NSW also says landlords with properties in a strata scheme must make sure smoke alarms are working.
Electrician Killara: who arranges the work?
| Your situation | Who is responsible | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You own a house or a lot in a strata building | You, for anything within your property (NSW) | Book a licensed electrician for work inside your home. |
| A cable is on common property | The owners corporation (NSW) | Report it to the owners corporation. |
| You rent and a hard-wired smoke alarm fails | Your landlord, using a licensed electrician (NSW) | Tell your landlord or agent. |
| A powerline is down in the street | Ausgrid, on 13 13 88 | Stay 8 metres away. |
If Ausgrid supplies your home, its page on private poles says owners are responsible for the electrical assets on their property beyond its connection point. That includes private power poles, powerlines and pole-top fittings. It also says owners must keep vegetation clear of private overhead powerlines.
Ausgrid says any tree trimming within three metres of its powerlines must only be done by accredited workers.
Ausgrid says a Level 2 provider can install, repair or maintain the service lines between a customer installation and its network. Those lines run overhead or underground. We hold Level 2 accreditation, number 5559.
